From Classrooms to Crime Scenes to Closing Deals
“I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13, RSV)
“God will always provide for those who put Him first,” says Brian Sanchez. This belief has carried Brian through classrooms, crime scenes, and now the competitive world of real estate. Faith and fearlessness are the threads that have rewritten his story.
Brian grew up in Southern California, theology degree in hand, dreaming of making a difference. After college, he stepped into the classroom, teaching high school religion, leading campus ministry, and coaching basketball. “It was rewarding, but I realized that this job wasn’t meant to be my profession. It was the same repetition and I was not feeling satisfied,” he says. “Worse yet, the money was barely enough to live on, and with no real retirement, it simply wasn’t sustainable for the dreams I had and the life I wanted.”
In 2007, he met his wife Nickol. “I knew I was going to marry her,” he smiles. “But I knew I wasn’t going to be able to financially support her the way I wanted.” His wife was an RN and Brian knew that a change was in order.
One morning, as he drove to work, he heard a radio ad: The San Diego Police Department was hiring. Without hesitation, Brian applied. That leap of faith transformed his life in more ways than one. Police work was high stakes and exciting. “It was everything teaching was not and provided more opportunity for the life I was after. When I became a police officer, it just clicked. I enjoyed what I was doing. You never knew how your shift was going to start or end, and every day was different,” he says. He quickly rose to the rank of Detective and excelled at investigative work, focusing on homicides, robberies, sex crimes, fugitive apprehension, and other major cases. Service had always defined him throughout his entire career, first through ministry, then education, and now in law enforcement, but the stakes had never been higher.
Life in California, however, came with its own battles. The cost of living was staggering, commutes were long, and being on-call stretched every hour of the day. With three young children, Brian and his wife found themselves in the “rat race.” They needed a way to provide more for their family and reclaim their quality of life. That’s when they turned their focus to real estate investing.
A New Chapter
Starting out in Indiana and later Oklahoma, after immersing themselves in the business and educating themselves on all things real estate investing, they learned how to manage contractors, navigate property markets, and handle every unexpected challenge that came their way. Brian admits, "Every failure became a lesson, and every win, a spark of hope."
Then came the defining moment. In 2022, Brian and his family faced a changing political and social climate in California and they made the bold decision to leave all they had known. Feeling satisfied with his career in law enforcement and his wife feeling the call to something different than nursing, they decided to continue their efforts in real estate and become full-time agents, and together they launched “Sirens & Scrubs Real Estate Team.” It was a leap of faith, especially with no safety net, no fallback plan, just a hope and a prayer for a better life. Three kids, a dog, and a pod of possessions.
“Whatever didn’t fit in the back of our minivan didn’t come with us,” he says. “I remember leaving many of our possessions behind. It was surreal and bittersweet.” Worse yet? They didn’t know a single person in Oklahoma. But they prayed, surrendered, and trusted God to lead them. “We only had what was in our savings account at the time, which we hoped was enough to get the business up and running.”
The early days in Oklahoma were tough. Brian’s real estate income was minimal, and the pressure of starting over without a backup plan weighed heavily. One morning, after a sleepless evening, he walked into his church, fell to his knees, crying and praying before the cross. “Where are you, God? I have followed your voice. I’ve picked up my whole family and moved here to chase this dream of a new life that I felt you were calling us to. What did I do? I can’t go back. Where are you?”
The answer came in the form of peace and from silence. Brian was reminded, “This is a business.” The thought took him by surprise. “At that moment, my mindset shifted from just thinking like a real estate agent to thinking like a business owner.” He realized that in any business, you needed to spend money and capital to make money and to drive foot traffic to your business.
With limited savings left, Brian took another leap of faith and made the intentional decision to reinvest it into their business, believing God would multiply their surrender. He threw himself into the work, learning to generate leads, network strategically, market successfully, and master the craft of real estate. The results were remarkable. In his first year, he closed 34 transactions totaling $7.5 million. The second year, 38 transactions totaling $12.1 million. Most recently, he closed 61 transactions worth $18 million. Sirens & Scrubs Real Estate Team has recently grown from what was a domestic team to a team with both new and experienced agents. Their passion is serving first responders, military families, and educators. People who, like them, live lives dedicated to service.
Brian emphasizes the success he has achieved, stating, “You have to be humble, serve others, and build trust. That’s how relationships and businesses thrive,” he says. “I’m not a salesperson. I am not here to sell you a home or an idea. I’m your guide, a resource, and a partner in your life.”
He reflects openly on the aspects of his previous life he still misses: the adrenaline of investigations and the pride in solving cases, the camaraderie with fellow officers, and the immediate impact of his work on victims. “But I’ve replaced that with another kind of fulfillment: serving people by helping them find the right home to build a place where lasting memories can be made,” Brian says.
A Wonderful Life
Now 45, with three very actively involved children, Brian and his wife have created the life they were chasing: their kids (Donovan, 15, Augustine “Auggie,” 13, and Michaela, 11) attend private schools, participate in sports, and enjoy new adventures they never seemed to have the time for in California.
“We try to take a trip once or twice a year,” he says. “We get our life back,” he smiles. "With a better quality of life, unmissed time with the kids, and peace of mind…it’s everything we prayed for, and God showed up right on time,” he says.
Looking ahead, Brian’s goals are lofty (but doable). He wants to expand his team with like-minded, driven agents, mentor others without the constraints of a traditional brokerage, and even replicate his success in other states. “Looking back, life has always been about taking risks for us. If you’re willing to work hard and trust God, anything is possible,” he says.
From classrooms to cop cars to closings, Brian Sanchez has answered the call and he’s just getting started. “God has never failed me, and He won’t start now. What He began, He will also provide for.” Brian is living proof.
