For Micah Tjeerdsma, becoming a real estate agent wasn’t part of some lifelong plan—it was a calling that gradually revealed itself through her love for people, a passion for the “hunt,” and a surprising realization that she could turn helping others into a career she genuinely loved.
Before real estate, Micah spent 15 years working for an oil and gas company in Tulsa. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, she moved to Oklahoma to attend Oral Roberts University and never looked back. Though she built a stable, comfortable life in the energy industry, something in her never stopped pulling her toward the search. “I’ve always loved helping people look for things—anything, really,” she says with a laugh. “I even had a blog called Look What I Found, because that’s what I’d say to my husband every time I stumbled on something new.”
Micah’s natural knack for discovering the perfect item—whether it was a couch, a dress, or eventually a house—turned into a realization: she might actually be able to make a career out of this.
The moment of clarity came when she helped close friends find a home listed on Zillow. “I said, ‘You’ve got to see this house, it’s going to sell fast!’ They took their agent, saw it, and bought it. That’s when I thought, ‘Son of a gun, I should be doing this.’” After repeated encouragement from her husband John, Micah finally got her license in August 2017—nearly eight years ago—and began selling homes part-time while still working in energy.
A Leap of Faith
It wasn’t until her company merged with another and relocated operations to Houston that Micah made the leap to full-time real estate. “I had zero desire to move, especially with my husband’s job here,” she recalls. “That transition gave me the opportunity to go all in.”
But it wasn’t an easy decision. “People told me to save six months of income before quitting my job—but that just wasn’t feasible,” she says. “I had to trust my instincts and create my own path.”
And that trust has paid off. Now a full-time real estate agent with McGraw Realtors, Micah’s built a reputation for kindness, professionalism, and the ability to make what can be a stressful process feel seamless. “My hope is that people remember their time with me as enjoyable and peaceful,” she says. “They don’t need to know every little bump in the road—my job is to absorb that stress so they can focus on the excitement.”
Passion Meets Purpose
Micah’s favorite part of the job? “The people,” she says without hesitation. “Whether it’s helping first-time homebuyers, investors, or house flippers—it’s incredibly fulfilling. I love watching someone walk into a home and just know it’s the one. Sometimes they even cry. You’re witnessing a major life moment.”
She also thrives on the research and strategy behind finding the right property. “I love the hunt. I love digging in, searching, finding the perfect fit. But the heart of it is the relationships you build through that process.”
Life Outside the Office
When she’s not helping clients, Micah enjoys life with her husband John and their two beloved dogs, Winston and Lulu. After moving into a home near Utica Square with a pool, their weekends are often filled with friends, laughter, and outdoor gatherings. “We love entertaining and trying new restaurants,” she says. “And I’m obsessed with tennis! I just picked it up a couple of years ago and now I’m hooked. John jokes that he always knows where I’m headed—tennis.”
Micah also has deep ties to her roots in Texas. Her parents still live in Fort Worth, where she grew up, and the family remains close. “We’re a big Texas family,” she says with pride. “My brother and sister-in-law are in Arkansas, and my nieces and nephews are kind of spread out, but family is everything.”
Advice for New Agents
For those just entering the industry, Micah encourages patience, persistence, and leaning on your community. “Don’t be afraid to tell your friends what you’re doing,” she says. “People want to support their friends. That made a huge difference for me early on.”
She also stresses the importance of trusting your instincts. “There’s no one ‘perfect’ way to do this business. It’s okay to grow slowly. Be consistent, be kind, and know that the next client is coming.”
And above all, choose a brokerage that truly supports you. “Having a team that helps you learn and grow is invaluable.”
More Than Just a Transaction
Micah approaches each client relationship with genuine care and a desire to make the process memorable. “Not every realtor is right for every person—but I hope I’m the right one for my people,” she says. “When they hug you at the end and say how thankful they are—it makes it all worth it.”
From blog posts to open houses, from oil and gas to full-time real estate, Micah Tjeerdsma’s path proves that passion and purpose can absolutely align. And for those lucky enough to work with her, it’s clear: she’s not just helping them find a house—she’s helping them find home.
